Sunday Soaking... In HOT WATER

READ:
But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 1 Corinthians 12:9-10

REFLECT:
If you wanted to make tea, what 2 things do you need? Correct! Hot water and tea. Unless you have a special "processed" tea bag that allows itself to be steeped in cold water, all tea must be made with hot water.

In life, each one of us will certainly face hardships. My husband and I had one year in our life where we suffered one devastating loss after another. It started out perfect, my husband and I discovered we were expecting our first child (unplanned... on the pill), so we moved quickly to purchase our first home (seemed like the logical thing to do at the time). Shortly after we signed all of the paper work, I had a miscarriage. Three months later we had another miscarriage. Two months after that I had a situation where I needed to change jobs, to the tune of a 75% pay cut. And THEN we found out we were expecting again.

My mantra throughout all of the difficult moments was "God is still God and He is still good". By the end of that year, the first sentence of our Christmas letter sums it up nicely "We have had a year full of happy endings." Though it was difficult during those long months with many tears and anxiety about our finances and the future, God carried us through and has blessed us greatly.

We may not know why certain things happen to us, but we can know that God can take bad experiences and turn them into good. Hot water makes good tea. Hard times show us God’s strength.

Why do you suppose Paul (the author of the above passage) delighted in hardships?

What about you? Do you view your difficulties in life as positive or negative? Do you find yourself moping and moaning or delighting in joy as you struggle?

REACT:
What difficulties are you facing right now? What challenges are making the joy of the Christmas season a difficult thing to accept? What do you think you can do or say right now to help yourself appreciate what you have?

Praying that you can rejoice through whatever life is throwing at you! Let the joy of Christmas overwhelm your dark spots and come into the light!

  4. Financial issues for us. Every time we get in a crunch, somehow we always catch a break. I totally believe in the power of prayer.
