Beauty, Blessings and Praise... OH MY {Isaiah 61:3}

Day 22 of 31 days - Part 3
{Want to read more about 31 days of {inner} Beauty? Click on the Tab at the top of the page}

Now we are moving on to Part 3, Beauty instead of Ashes.  This process is the best process, because these are those things we should be adding onto our lives.  The first part looked at what we need to be tossing out, the second part looked at understanding our identity in Him, this third and final part will be looking at those things that will replace the negative that we will be removing.

Today's Verse:
he will give a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
a joyous blessing instead of mourning,
    festive praise instead of despair.
In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks
    that the Lord has planted for his own glory.
Isaiah 61:3 (NLT)

I love trees.  If I have a camera on hand, you will find me taking as many pictures of trees as children. That is one of the reasons I love this verse (there are more).

Unpacking this verse backwards, I love the imagery of the "great oaks that the Lord has planted for his own glory".  At first glance it's just a nice image.

A tree.  Nice.

Wait.  Not just any tree but an oak.  Not just ANY oak, but a "great oak", which describes size.  How long does it take for an oak to grow?  How strong and stable do those oaks grow?

We have black oaks 'round these parts (Central California), and they are sturdy trees.  We have other types of oaks as well, there are some oaks I've seen that are well over 100 years old, with trunks that are more than 8 feet in diameter.    To be compared to a mighty oak is an amazing image, especially considering we are great oaks in our righteousness, planted for HIS glory (not our own.)

It might take us a while to become "great", but we are growing into something that will bring Him glory.

He promises to take us from mourning, ashes, despair and make us beautiful, overwhelmed with blessings, dancing in our praise.    I don't know about you, but there have been phases in my life that I have been walking in despair, or at least covered in ashes.  My face is downcast, my feet shuffling on, my heart heavy... in those moments I can hold on tight to the promise that God is already ahead of us, he is using our heavy moments to make us something more!

I find this hopeful, especially when I feel overwhelmed by life's both big and little challenges. God is doing something and He is working in me to make me righteous.   We are beautiful when we allow God to plant us and work us into great oaks, for HIS glory.
