I THINK therefore I am {Philippians 4:8}

Today's Verse: Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Philippians 4:8 (NIV)

The best part of this verse: that it tells us what we should fill our minds with.  I often get frustrated by the shouldn'ts or the don'ts of life.

I know we have to tell our kids no.  I am aware that part of life is knowing what we shouldn't do as well as what we should do.   

I get so tired of the list of rules we make for ourselves (and our kids) that focus primarily on the negative. "Don't hit your sister"
"Don't eat in the living room"
"Don't chew with your mouth open"

The reality is that that is NOT how our minds work.  When you tell someone NOT to do something the synapses in their brain don't know what to do with that information.  But if you tell someone to do something, then there is a possibility of a reaction. 

"Treat your sister (and everyone else) with kindness and respect"
"You can eat anywhere in the kitchen."
"When you chew, you should try to keep your lips closed".

The above verse is just like that.  Whatever is: True - so if it's lies, don't listen to it... noble, or of high moral character (guess I know what that is)... right, or correct and accurate (oh I keep thinking of the politics I've been listening to)... pure, or free from contamination (goes back to not of this world)... lovely, or enjoyable and pleasant... admirable, deserving to be admired ... excellent,  high quality or standard... praiseworthy, deserving praise.  

It is a call to focus our mind on those things that are positive and uplifting, rather than negative and critical.  What a challenge in today's culture, especially if you have friends. 

We are beautiful as we recognize what we are putting in our heads and filter it accordingly!
