Words, words, everywhere are words

Do you have a word for the year?

Well, if you don't you aren't alone.  But apparently, those who have a word for the year seem to be a growing group.

I don't know where this idea originated... I don't know why I never heard about it until this year. {If you do know, please tell me, I am really curious}... but I do know that it seems like an interesting idea.

As for me, I wasn't going to jump on the bandwagon because usually I get a word halfway through the year from God... and I wasn't about to ask for that much pressure this early on.

The word that comes from God usually comes through some sort of ... discipline or challenge to do something differently or be better.  Words I've embraced in the past : gentleness, peacemaking, gentleness, patience, gentleness, confidence, love... you get the idea.  God keeps pulling me back to the same words.

I work for an organization called Youth for Christ, as I mentioned in my previous post, I am at a week-long conference learning about how to my job better.

Guess what?

We were challenged to come up with not just one word... but a word for every letter in our first name or our nickname.  Something that would define, inspire, challenge and help us abide more fully with God.

So I wrote my name out and stared at those letters.

They were mocking me.

A - Awesome... awkward?  No.  Not quite.

L - Listen.  Yes.  Listen more to what other people are saying, and more to what they aren't saying.

I - Intentionally seek out people who can invest in my life to challenge me to be better.

S - Speak truth in love

S - Sashay? Silly faces? No.  Don't think so.

A - Allow room for mistakes - start treating myself with more grace and less contempt

I still have work to do.

What about you?  Do you have a word for the year? If so, how did you pick it?

Do you think that having a word is like making goals or resolutions?
Why or why not?

  1. I struggled to find my word this year. In 2011, my Word was Constant, wanting to be constant in my faith, steadfast in my pursuit of Him. 2012 found me with Pursue, as I continued to learned how to be still and abide. I layed my head down one night, and what I heard was a string of words from the Lord, that formed my One Word, "Simply". He said first, "simply love, simply live and simply give". Wow, could it be this easy? I'm on the journey. Looking forward to following yours!

    1. I love your post on this!! :) beautiful!!

  2. I guess a word is sort of like a resolution but I think it's more like a focus. If you get off track you haven't failed, you just need to refocus on your word. I think it's a neat idea but have never done it myself (yet)

    1. I like the idea of a focus rather than a resolution

  3. I know about this happening but I haven't been able to pick a definitive word. Which means I will probably be here in 2014 saying the exact thing.

I think mine would be "Shine".

Not like a star or sequins. I want to do the things I love and work my ass off on them until I shine, from the inside out, where I feel like I have done something I am so proud of that the shine can't stop flowing from my pores.

I want to shine as a mother.
I want to shine in accomplishing my dreams.
I want to shine by walking away from the negativity or fears and insecurity which have made me feel dull, unworthy, unspecial in the past.

Perhaps its a cheesy word. But it's the first thing that kind of came out of my heart as I really sat here thinking.
    Happy New Year, AJ.
    A for Amazing? Able?
