Thankful for Every Circumstance {1 Thessalonians 5:16-18}

Verse: Always be joyful.  Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Main Idea: God wants us to be thankful {focus on the positive} all the time!  Even when bad things happen, and we feel sad or angry, God wants us to be thankful above everything else.  It seems impossible, but it's something that God can help you do {because you belong to Him}.

2}What is the difference between being joyful and being happy?  {Joyfulness is something that comes from knowing that God loves you and is always there, while happiness is dependent on your circumstances}
3} The verse says "never stop praying".  What does that mean?  Can you pray all the time?
4} How can we be thankful even when bad things happen?  What if you are sick?  What if you are in trouble?  How can you be thankful in those circumstances?
5} If your friends see you full of joy and being thankful even when things aren't "perfect", what will that show them?  How can that show them your faith in God?
6} Is this verse saying that it's not okay to be sad or angry sometimes?  {NO! It's okay to feel all sorts of emotions, both good and bad, we should just remember that no matter what is happening, no matter how we feel, God is always the same, and for that we can be thankful!}

  1. You know it is so true that there is a difference between joy and happiness. I am happy when I'm riding a roller coaster or buying a new outfit, but I'm joyful daily because of His love. It just makes my heart swell in a way that a new outfit cant. I think people are searching for that joy, and often times are looking in the wrong place

  2. Hi AJ,

    It's question #4 that is the hard question, huh? I've been pondering what that looks like -- yes, we thank him in everything-- but pondering through that for a friend who has walked through rough things -- or for her kids who have too.

    God's heart is good, I am convinced of it, even when we can't understand what his hands are doing.
